Africa-Press – Angola. Eighteen athletes from the province of Cunene participate for the first time in the senior National Judo Championship, taking place from the 3rd to the 5th of November, in Malanje, said over the weekend, the general secretary of the Judo Association, Celestino Brandon.
The athletes in the phase of intensifying their preparation, qualified for the “national”, after competing in August, the provincial championship, which brought together 58 athletes, in the 60, 66, 73, 81 and 88 kg weight categories.
Celestino Brandão said that the judokas assigned to four local clubs are training hard for a worthy representation in this first participation in a national competition.
He informed that they are mobilizing support to cover expenses including transportation, accommodation and food for the delegation, with plans to travel to the race site on the 31st of this month.
Celestino Brandão considered that judo in Cunene is evolving, given that in three years of existence, the Association has already held two provincial championships, qualifying the Friendship League and the “national” in Malanje.
In November 2022, six Cunene athletes participated for the first time in a national judo tournament, for juniors and cadets, called “Liga Amizade”, which took place in the province of Huíla.
Judo is a fighting modality, whose main objectives are to strengthen the physique, mind and spirit in an integrated way, in addition to developing self-defense techniques.
The Cunene Provincial Judo Association controls seven schools and one club, as well as 275 practitioners, in the municipalities of Cuanhama, Ombadja and Namacunde.
