Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, defended, this Monday, in Luanda, the commitment to multilateral diplomacy in all dimensions and the strengthening of institutions that have the responsibility to prevent conflicts and guarantee peace and universal security .

According to the Angolan Head of State, at the opening of the 147th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), the central motto of the meeting, “Parliamentary Action for Peace, Justice and strong institutions”, recalls that the factors of instability, already identified, will only be overcome if this type of diplomacy is invested in.

Parliamentary diplomacy, he explained, is an undeniable force in international relations, and the most pressing issues affecting humanity have also been addressed by parliamentarians, whether on a bilateral or multilateral level.

He said that the meeting takes place at a time when the people of the world in general are calling for more peace, justice and institutions that are increasingly inclusive, decisive, and more active in building the global purposes of the international community.

In his speech to more than a thousand parliamentarians, he suggested that the action to be developed during the five days of discussions, in addition to generating deep reflections, could contribute to the construction and solidification of mechanisms for promoting peace and social justice.

He recalled that topics on international security, engagement of deputies in dialogue, legislation, oversight, the role of parliaments in promoting a culture of transparency, against corruption and the engagement of citizens to restore trust in national and international institutions will be debated.

“This assembly will also feature reflections linked to sustainable development where topics will be debated on partnerships for climate action, promoting access to green energy at affordable prices and ensuring innovation, global food security as well as the contribution of parliamentarians to the conference of the UN on climate change COP 28, which will take place at the end of this year”, he said.

For João Lourenço, the central themes of the conference are of great importance in supporting the growth of developing countries, as they need to find consensus on the need to preserve international peace and security, sustainable development and promotion of human rights.

He also highlighted the cycle of parallel meetings that will be held on gender equality and the necessary reforms in the United Nations Security Council and in the main international financial institutions.

He called for an end to the conflict in Sudan, Ukraine and the Middle East, with the urgent need to stop the guns and give way to diplomacy, so that the lives of civilians, children, women and the elderly are saved and a catastrophe is avoided humanitarian aid in these conflicts.

Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he hoped that diplomatic efforts would be successful so that humanitarian law would be respected, hospitals, refugee camps and residential areas would be spared, and populations would not be denied the most basic rights of citizens, even in a war situation, such as access to water, food and medical assistance.

According to the Angolan president, there is every need to explore the root causes of the conflict that has lasted for more than seventy-five years, with millions of Palestinians without land, without a homeland and without the possibility of returning to the land that has always been theirs. belonged.

For these and other reasons, he defended the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to live in the State of Palestine, side by side with the State of Israel, each respecting the principle of peaceful coexistence, good neighborliness, friendship and cooperation.

“Only the effective creation of the State of Palestine will put a definitive end to this cycle of hatred and violence that the world has watched helplessly for decades and that has already shed a lot of blood from Palestinian and Israeli citizens”, he stressed.

He left the message that cannons will not bring definitive peace to the Middle East, only diplomacy and above all the will, the capacity of the world, in particular the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, to comply with their own resolutions, to create the State of Palestine.

Founded in 1889, on the initiative of the Englishman William Randal Cremer and the Frenchman Frédéric Passy, the UIP is one of the oldest political organizations in the world and currently has more than 46 thousand deputies from 179 national parliaments, promoting peace and democracy.

It is a center for dialogue and parliamentary diplomacy between legislators representing all political systems and the main political ideologies at a global level, constituting a unique platform for observing political opinions and trends around the world.

The IPU is the main parliamentary interlocutor of the UN and brings the voice of parliaments to the decision-making processes of the United Nations, regularly presenting its resolutions in the General Assembly, making statements, participating in debates and organizing parliamentary meetings on the main themes of the UN agenda. UN.

In recognition of this important role, in 2002 the United Nations granted him permanent observer status.
