Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, highlighted this Monday, in Luanda, the importance of parliamentary diplomacy as a mechanism for intervention and advocacy for the main issues of global interest.

The Statesman made these references at the opening session of the 147th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), which takes place in the Angolan capital until Friday (27), in the presence of more than a thousand delegates from representatives of parliaments from all over the world.

According to President João Lourenço, today the IPU has become a global authority of reference in the promotion of democratic institutions, global security, the defense of human rights and gender equality, sustainable development, environmental protection, as well as of youth empowerment.

This path, he argued, led to the organization becoming a permanent observer member of the United Nations System, as a form of recognition for the mission and contribution it has made to stability, fraternity and solidarity among all the peoples of the world.

For João Lourenço, holding the event in the country is a tribute to the dynamism of Angolan parliamentary diplomacy with international organizations and countries in the global interparliamentary network, whose merit is due to the national deputies.

He said that the country welcomes the event as a way of contributing to the resolution of global problems of peace, social justice and promoting exchange between people and nations.

According to the Statesman, democracy in Angola has been a process in constant evolution and overcoming, developed through the different democratically elected State institutions.

For the Angolan President, national reconciliation and political stability are the greatest achievements of Angolans, which makes it possible to transmit and share these principles and values ​​with other countries, especially in the Great Lakes and Southern regions of the continent, where there are some pockets of instability. , violation of constitutional normality and the weakening of the social and economic fabric of countries in conflict.

“As president pro tempore of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and also president of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), we have intensified efforts to find joint definitive solutions for the normalization of some of the continent’s conflicts. African through intense diplomatic actions”, he said.

In the global context, President João Lourenço added that “we are also witnessing other worrying and unfavorable situations for global security, namely the war in Europe and the proliferation of conflicts in other latitudes, the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean, international terrorism and transnational organized crime, climate change, growing humanitarian, food and energy crises”.

Founded in 1889, on the initiative of the Englishman William Randal Cremer and the Frenchman Frédéric Passy, ​​the UIP is one of the oldest political organizations in the world and currently has more than 46 thousand deputies from 179 national parliaments, promoting peace and democracy.

It is a center for dialogue and parliamentary diplomacy between legislators representing all political systems and the main political ideologies at a global level, constituting a unique platform for observing political opinions and trends around the world.
