Africa-Press – Angola. Members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) approved this Tuesday, in Luanda, the accession of the Bahamas as the 180th Member Parliament of the multilateral organization.

The vote took place during the meeting of the Executive Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), held in the Plenary room of the National Assembly.

Located in the north Atlantic, the Bahamas archipelago is made up of around seven hundred islands, of which only thirty are inhabited. With a total area of ​​13,949 km2, its main neighbors are the United States of America and Cuba. Its neighbors are also Haiti and Turkis and Caicós, both to the southeast.

Founded in 1889, on the initiative of the Englishman William Randal Cremer and the Frenchman Frédéric Passy, ​​the UIP is one of the oldest political organizations in the world and currently has more than 46 thousand deputies from 179 national parliaments, promoting peace and democracy.

It is a center for dialogue and parliamentary diplomacy between legislators representing all political systems and the main political ideologies at a global level, constituting a unique platform for observing political opinions and trends around the world.

The IPU is the main parliamentary interlocutor of the UN and brings the voice of parliaments to the decision-making processes of the United Nations, regularly presenting its resolutions in the General Assembly, making statements, participating in debates and organizing parliamentary meetings on the main themes of the UN agenda. In recognition of this important role, in 2002 the United Nations granted him permanent observer status.
