Africa-Press – Angola. The vice-president of the MPLA, Luísa Damião, considered, this Wednesday, in Luanda, the holding of the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) in Angola as historic, which, for the first time, will elect a woman to its presidency.
Speaking to the press, at the end of a meeting with deputies from member parties of the Socialist International, Luísa Damião said that the election of a woman to the presidency of the IPU “is clear proof of the exploitation of this fringe on the continent”.
Four women from African parliaments are running for the position for a three-year term, namely Adji Diarra Mergane Kanouté, from Senegal, Catherine Gotani Hara, from Malawi, Tulia Ackson, from Tanzania, and Marwa Abdibashir Hagi, from Somalia.
In relation to the 147th General Assembly of the IPU with the motto of peace, justice and strong institutions, he revealed that Angola, through its experience during the years of armed conflict, knows the meaning of peace, which is why it has passed on its experience to other countries .
In his view, dialogue is a ‘sine quo non’ condition for achieving peace.
He informed that the MPLA, as a member of the Socialist International, participates in the meeting to make its contributions on the importance of peace, justice and having strong institutions.
