Throughout his parliamentary career he traveled the world to promote climate action.

He was elected president of the Parliament of Tuvalu in 2019.

The parliamentarian expressed his joy for the award and for having recognized his work in favor of climate action.

“We hope that we can all overcome climate change, if we save the world we will save the planet and all countries”, he expressed.

The initiative to award the deputy of the year, at the level of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), emerged during the mandate of Portuguese Duarte Pacheco.

“As we are an organization of parliamentarians, we understand that we should reward an active parliamentarian who has stood out in a certain action”, he highlighted.

Tuvalu is a Polynesian state located in southern Oceania and formed by a group of nine islands and atolls, formerly called the Ellice Islands. It has maritime borders with Kiribati, to the north and northeast; with New Zealand territory of Tokelau, to the east, with Samoa, to the southeast; with the French territory of Wallis and Futuna to the south; and with Fiji, also to the south.

It is strategically located in southern Oceania. To the west, the closest neighbor is the Solomon Islands, but the distance between the two groups of islands is considerable (around 900 kilometers).

Tuvalu is just 5 meters above sea water, making it the second country in the world with the lowest altitude and extremely vulnerable to aspects of climate change.
