Africa-Press – Angola. The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, highlighted, on Monday, the role played by the United Nations (UN), in providing humanitarian assistance, distributing food and protecting refugees, benefiting millions of people all over the world.

Likewise, he also emphasized the importance of the 2030 Agenda and the partnership between Angola and the UN to promote sustainable development in the country.

The Angolan ruler, who spoke on behalf of the head of Angolan diplomacy Téte António, during the ceremony marking the 78th Anniversary of the United Nations (UN), highlighted its remarkable evolution since its foundation, with its peace missions, humanitarian programs and actions around the world.

He also mentioned that the importance of the date shows equal rights and hope for a better world, which continues to be the philosophical basis of the UN, representing the unity of nations in the face of common challenges.

Esmeralda Mendonça took the opportunity to congratulate the United Nations family and its Member States for 78 years of service to humanity and for their commitment to promoting the fundamental pillars of peace, security, human rights and sustainable development.

In turn, the resident coordinator of the United Nations in Angola, Zahira Virani, congratulated the Government of Angola on its new National Development Plan and reiterated the commitment of the United Nations System to supporting the country in the pursuit of prosperity and well-being of all Angolans.

In her intervention, Zahira Virani highlighted the cooperation framework between Angola and the UN, in addition to emphasizing the continuous commitment of the latter’s Agencies, Funds and Programs to serve the Angolan people.

The theme of United Nations Day 2023, “Equality, Freedom and Justice for All”, was mentioned as a reminder of the UN’s essential commitment to the pursuit of a more just and peaceful world for all human beings.

The UN is an international organization founded in 1945, made up of 193 member countries, which aims to promote peace, security, international cooperation and sustainable development.

The organization acts as a global forum for conflict resolution, human rights, humanitarian assistance and cooperation on global issues such as climate change and health and plays a crucial role in promoting peace and finding solutions to global problems.

The anniversary symbolizes the anniversary of the UN, originally established on October 24, 1945, with the entry into force of the Charter of the United Nations.
