Africa-Press – Angola. Ambassador Miguel Bembe presented Friday, in Asmara, the Letters of Credentials to the President of the State of Eritrea, Isaias Afowerki, to whom he conveyed the greetings of the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço.

According to a note diplomat Miguel Bembe thus becomes the first ambassador in history to be accredited in the State of Eritrea, residing in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia).

On this occasion, he expressed his determination to work towards strengthening and expanding relations of friendship and cooperation between both countries and peoples.

Speaking at the accreditation ceremony, Ambassador Miguel Bembe highlighted that there is a large Eritrean community residing in Angolan territory, which is dedicated to business activity, especially in the fields of general trade and manufacturing industry.

He argued that it is essential and urgent to accelerate the process that aims to create the basic conditions inherent to the launch and consolidation of bilateral cooperation, taking advantage of the potential and opportunities offered by the two countries, as well as corresponding to the will of the two peoples.

To this end, he mentioned that it is pertinent to promote the negotiation and signing of essential legal instruments to boost and expand cooperation relations between both States.

The Angolan diplomat highlighted the political-diplomatic, economic and commercial areas, as well as defense and security as those of greatest relevance for bilateral cooperation.

In the political-diplomatic domain, he suggested the negotiation and signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the Establishment of Political Consultation Mechanisms between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Angola and that of Foreign Affairs of the State of Eritrea.

In the defense and security sector, ambassador Miguel Bembe proposed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, the implementation of cooperation in the area of ​​combating terrorism and organized crime, as well as the exchange of experiences in the areas of maritime security and combating maritime piracy.

In terms of potential, Eritrea has agricultural resources (corn, barley, vegetables and livestock) and mineral resources (copper, gold, silver and zinc). It also has a large flow of funds from its diaspora.

With five (5) million inhabitants, the State of Eritrea borders Sudan to the west, Ethiopia to the south, and Djibouti to the southeast. The northeastern and eastern parts of the country have an extensive coastline along the Red Sea, with Saudi Arabia and Yemen on the other shore. The Dalaque archipelago and the Hanish islands also form part of its territory.

Residing in Addis Ababa, diplomat Miguel Bembe has held, since April 27 of this year, the position of Angolan ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Community for Africa.

He is also accredited as Ambassador of Angola to Djibouti, with non-resident status, since October 23rd.
