Africa-Press – Angola. Angola’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, ambassador Mateus Luemba, defended, on Monday (20), greater global concerted efforts to put an end to conflicts around the world, addressing their root causes, with investment in preventive diplomacy and mediation.
According to a press release from the Permanent Mission of Angola to the United Nations, the diplomat made these references when intervening in the Security Council’s open debate on the Maintenance of International Peace and Security, Promoting Sustainable Peace through Common Development.
On the occasion, he highlighted the need to promote the peacebuilding agenda to help countries sustain peace and achieve inclusive development.
He noted that Angola attaches special importance to the interconnection between peace, security and development, for this reason, the country hosts the Pan-African Forum for the Culture of Peace in Africa – Luanda Biennial, from 22 to 24 November 2023, in partnership with the African Union (AU) and UNESCO, whose objective is to promote democratic principles and practices, consolidate an environment of political tolerance and inclusion on the continent, aiming for sustainable development.
On the other hand, he pointed out several factors as being at the basis of unbalanced global development, namely conflicts, food insecurity, high energy prices and adverse effects of climate change.
Likewise, he highlighted that global economic challenges, resulting from pandemics and endemic diseases, could further destabilize economies, especially in developing countries.
Mateus Luemba also considered the alarming increase in external debt in the world as another factor that could reduce the prospect of economic growth, increase inflation, create political instability or reduce confidence in governments.
In his speech, he highlighted that common development is a shared and collective responsibility in an increasingly interdependent world, and therefore considered it necessary to implement some actions, in particular the restructuring of the global governance system through reform comprehensive international financial architecture and the long-awaited reform of the Security Council, in which Africa is adequately represented in both categories of membership.
Among these, he adds, is also the stabilization of international financial markets, the promotion of inclusive growth to combat poverty and unemployment, the construction of better and modern infrastructure and investment in education, the acceleration of agricultural modernization and industrial transformation , thus contributing to the peace and stability of countries in the long term.
