Fishing associations in Cuando Cubango cry out for funding

Africa-Press – Angola. Fishermen’s associations in the province of Cuando Cubango are calling for bank credits to increase the practice of artisanal fishing, with a view to diversifying sources of income and improving their quality of life.

The concern of the 92 associations was expressed this Thursday by the head of the Fisheries department in the province of Cuando Cubango, Anabela Maria Sachanja Almeida, stating that with bank and refundable financing, fishermen will have the possibility of purchasing of motor boats, fishing nets, hooks, lines, among other kits.

He said that fishermen need adequate equipment to carry out their activities smoothly and, with them, improve the well-being of their families.

The official recalled that the last time this social group received support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry was, between 2010 and 2011, in the form of rowing boats, fishing nets, hooks, lines and other means.

In addition to the 92 associations, Anabela Almeida said that the sector also controls some associations that practice aquaculture, with emphasis on the Missombo Larviculture Center, which has more than 38 greenhouses for the production of Tilapia (Cacusso).

António Baptista Cassanga, member of a fishing association that operates in the village of Cuelei, 30 kilometers west of the city of Menongue, capital of Cuando Cubango, lamented the fact that the fishing material they had received in 2010 did not exist, forcing the associated with using Musua (fishing trap), precarious canoes and hooks.

Therefore, he asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to intercede with related institutions to obtain bank credits, in order to allow members to carry out their profession.

For his part, the technician from the National Institute of Support for Small and Medium Enterprises (INAPEM), Guvaldino Cantamba, explained that the institution grants credit, within the scope of the Planapesca plan, through the Angola Development Bank (BDA) to associations of fishermen in large and small handmade.

Therefore, he called on associations in the province of Cuando Cubango to have all the documents and requirements required for this purpose, such as updated permits, taxpayer number, social security, among others, for this purpose.
