Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, traveled this Friday to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he will participate, over the weekend, in the 37th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).

At 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, accompanied by the First Lady, Ana Dias Lourenço, the Statesman received greetings from the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, and other individuals present.

Before the meeting, on the 17th and 18th, João Lourenço participates in an extraordinary meeting on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) which he called to present the report on the implementation of the mediation mandate assigned by the AU.

João Lourenço is the mediator chosen by the AU to resolve the conflict between the DRC and Rwanda and is Acting President of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL).

On the other hand, according to the agenda of the 37th Summit of Heads of State and Government, among other matters, there is the launch of the AU theme for 2024 and the presentation of previously agreed reports.

It also provides for the analysis of draft legal instruments, elections and appointments, presentation of points proposed by Member States, with emphasis on the 3rd Edition of the Pan-African Forum for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence – “Luanda Biennial”.

The meeting will also approve the 2023 Declaration of the 5th biannual Coordination Meeting, held in Nairobi, Kenya, as well as the adoption of the decisions and declarations of the 37th Ordinary Session of the AU Conference.

The AU is the international organization with 55 countries that promotes integration between countries on the African continent in the most different aspects.

The AU, a replacement for the Organization of African Union (OAU), was announced in the Declaration of Sirte, Libya, on September 9, 1999.

The Group was founded on 26 May 2001 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and launched on 9 July 2002 in Durban, South Africa.
