Africa-Press – Angola. Angola has implemented several programs with a view to mitigating the harmful consequences of drug use, assured the country’s permanent representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna, Austria, Isabel de Jesus Godinho.

The ambassador, who was speaking at the 67th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), which takes place in the Austrian capital from the 14th to the 22nd of this month, highlighted the measures to prevent and raise awareness in society against the illegal use and trade of drugs and the existence of treatment, recovery and reintegration centers for drug addicts.

He also highlighted the actions of the Angolan Executive to restrict and combat organized and cross-border drug crime.

In his intervention, he defended the prevention and addressing of the consequences and challenges of drug use, in all their complexity, as a crucial element for fulfilling the global commitments enshrined in the various conventions and in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

He called for coordinated and sustained action, including accelerating the implementation of global, regional and national policies, based on the international drug control system and respect for human rights and the promotion of the well-being and dignity of all beings humans.

The meeting comprises a high-level segment and another technical segment. The first took place from the 14th to the 15th of March and was the highlight of the event, which was presided over by Ghana’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Philbert Johnson, in his capacity as president of the 67th Commission of the CND.

During the high-level segment, most delegations considered the use of drugs as an evil that affects humanity and whose consequences have reached alarming proportions.

In this regard, they agreed to trigger concerted action by the international community, in which governments and international organizations and civil society converge in the same direction.

In the technical follow-up, issues related to strategic management, budgetary and administrative issues, reinforcement of international cooperation, among others, will be analyzed.
