Africa-Press – Angola. Angola mediated, this Thursday (21), in Luanda, a high-level meeting between delegations from Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to analyze the issue of security and peace in the east of this country in the southern region of the continent.
The delegations were led by Christophe Pen’Apala, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the DRC, and Vincent Biruta, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Rwanda, facilitated by Angola, represented by a delegation led by the minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António.
According to a press release, the ministerial meeting took place in a cordial, pleasant and serene environment, marked by optimism for achieving lasting peace, with ministers agreeing on the occasion to hold a second meeting, at ministerial level. , within days, in the Angolan capital.
The meeting aimed to relaunch the foundations of constructive dialogue and the process of peace, stability and security in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in accordance with the decision taken in meetings held in Luanda by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, with his counterparts from DRC and Rwanda, respectively, Félix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame.
Several local and foreign armed groups operate in eastern DRC, notably the March 23 Movement (M23). which allegedly receives support from the Rwandan authorities.
Made up mainly of ethnic Tutsi, the M23 claims to be fighting to defend Congolese Tutsis from discrimination and “extremist groups” such as the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), an ethnic Hutu rebel militia.
