Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, met, this Tuesday, in Luanda, with his counterpart from South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, with whom he discussed issues related to the peace process in the Democratic Republic of Congo ( DRC) and the conflict in Sudan.
At the end of the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, explained to the press that the statesmen essentially addressed the peace process in the DRC and the conflict in Sudan, taking into account President João Lourenço’s mediating role in the conflict between Rwanda and the DRC.
He recalled that, as acting president of the East African Community (EAC), Salva Kiir Mayardit has responsibilities in the Nairobi process and mediates the conflict in Sudan.
For these reasons, he said, it was a meeting between the “Champion of Peace” and Reconciliation in Africa and the President of the EAC, as there are responsibilities that are complementary and in this sense the heads of states analyzed the two situations.
He mentioned that there was a convergence of points of view regarding their analysis of the two conflicts, as they agreed to continue working in coordination for peace in those regions.
Téte António highlighted that João Lourenço and Salva Kiir Mayardit spoke about bilateral relations, recalling that the countries have a rich history, from the point of view of the support granted by Angola to South Sudan during the struggle for independence.
Angola and South Sudan maintain excellent friendly and cooperative relations. Both are part of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL), an organization created in 1994 with the aim of resolving issues of peace and security in the area.
