Africa-Press – Angola. The Ombudsman, Florbela Rocha Araújo, committed this Tuesday, in Luanda, to advocating with the competent authorities and raising awareness among the population to look responsibly at autistic people and those with developmental disabilities.

The provider received in audience the president of the Angolan Association for the Support of Autistic People and Global Developmental Disorder (APEGADA), António Teixeira, as part of the 2nd of April, “world autism awareness day”.

On the occasion, Florbela Araújo recalled that the Ombudsman’s Office is governed by the principle of independence, with a commitment to “leave no one behind”.

He considered health as an indispensable good for human beings, which must be preserved.

Florbela Araújo found out about the projects in the pipeline and welcomed the concerns raised by this association, which brings together more than two thousand members.

During the hearing, António Teixeira addressed the need to include this vulnerable segment and requested institutional support from the Ombudsman, with the competent bodies, within the scope of his judiciary.

Among the concerns presented by the president of the association, the embarrassment in handling personal documents stands out, due to the difficulty in signing them, and the need for greater access to health, inclusive education and the job market.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by atypical development, behavioral manifestations, insufficient communication and social interaction, repetitive and stereotyped behavior patterns, with a restricted repertoire of interests.

World Autism Day was defined by the United Nations in 2007, with the aim of raising awareness among the world’s population about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
