Angola’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Francisco José da Cruz, held a meeting this week with the special representative of the UN Secretary-General for Violence Against Children, Najat Maalla, from whom he received the information that he will undertake a tour of the SADC countries, from the 8th to the 17th of April this year.

Najat Maalla took the opportunity to congratulate Angola in its capacity as acting president of SADC, counting on the country’s support for the holding of the Ministerial Conference on Violence Against Children, to be held in Bogotá, Colombia, from 7 to 8 November 2024.

He informed that the visit to Angola is part of the second phase of his tour to the SADC region to be held in August this year.

In Angola, Najat Maalla plans to hold a series of high-level meetings with government entities and key actors in the fight against child violence, highlighting the opportunity to identify, accelerate and expand existing promising practices and actions to prevent and respond to violence against children. children in the country and in the subregion.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence Against Children is an independent children’s rights advocate who works globally to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against children. It establishes connections and catalyzes action across regions, sectors and environments where violence against children may occur.

Its activities include organizing expert consultations to understand the root causes and risk factors of violence; publish strategic thematic studies to prevent and respond to violence against children; assess progress in implementing the recommendations of the United Nations Study; Report annually on progress in protecting children from violence and monitor the UN response to the pandemic in the context of children.
