Africa-Press – Angola. Thirty-five members of civil society organizations from the provinces of Benguela, Bié, Huambo and Moxico have been participating since Wednesday, in the workshop on local government and electoral monitoring, in an initiative of the South African foundation “Democracy Works Foundation”. (DWF).
The training and strengthening event for democratic institutions brings together journalists from different media outlets and representatives of political parties, with the aim of raising the culture regarding local governance.
The South African foundation Democracy Works Foundations (in Portuguese Fundação Democracia Functiona) represented in eight African countries, with this training action aims to strengthen the capacity of civil society in the electoral process in Angola.
On the occasion, the director of DWF in Angola, Augusto Santana, said it was necessary to train organized civil society and journalists, so that they could transmit knowledge about local authorities, so that when elections are scheduled, there will be citizens knowledgeable about these issues..
He mentioned that the greater the number of citizens who have control over local authority issues, the more peaceful their implementation becomes, judging by the efforts being undertaken by Government structures, to make this happen.
He highlighted the need to strengthen Angolan democratic values, at a time when political parties with Parliamentary representation want local elections to improve the political paradigm in Angola.
He emphasized that these trainings result from insufficient knowledge about local authorities among the population, after a study carried out by DWF in various regions of the country, hence the need to multiply these themes in communities, so that the electoral process takes place in a more peaceful environment.
During the training, participants will improve their knowledge on topics related to basic notions about elections, the legal environment, norms, international, regional and national principles.
DWF Angola is an international institution that operates in several SADC countries, where local elections are already held and based on this experience, they have been designing a civic education program since 2020.
