Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, received, this Tuesday, in Luanda, a message from his Liberian counterpart, Joseph Nyumah Boakai, in which he expressed his interest in relaunching cooperation between the two states.
The missive was delivered by the Liberian statesman’s special envoy, Sheick Al-Moustapha Kouyateh, during an audience granted by President João Lourenço.
Speaking to the press, Sheick Al-Moustapha Kouyateh said he had delivered a message of brotherhood, which deals with diplomatic, commercial and social development issues, in addition to an invitation for the Angolan Head of State to visit the Republic of Liberia, on a date to be agreed by the parties.
On the occasion, he spoke of the existence of a spirit of brotherhood between the two countries, cemented since the time of Presidents Agostinho Neto (Angola) and William Tubman (Liberia).
According to the special envoy, the idea involves reactivating relations, because the Liberian President sees Angola as a “great” country and believes in the leadership and experience of his Angolan counterpart.
He said that his country has a lot to learn from Angola, highlighting that Liberia would not be what it is today without its help, highlighting the fact that, in the past, it hosted many Liberian cadres.
Therefore, he expressed his interest in seeing relations strengthened in the economic, diplomatic, commercial, education and tourism areas.
“We believe that your support for our recently elected President will be of great value so that Liberia can embark on the path of development”, he concluded.
Angola and Liberia signed, in September 2011, the General Cooperation Agreement in the Economic, Commercial, Technical, Scientific and Cultural domains and the Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of the Political Consultation Mechanism.
On May 27, 2022, the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, and the then Liberian President, George Weah, held a meeting in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, on the sidelines of the Extraordinary African Union Summit on Humanitarian Issues and Donors Conference , during which they envisaged the strengthening of bilateral relations.
