Head of Portuguese diplomacy wants to “close dialogue”

Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, João Gomes Cravinho, starts today a two-day visit to Angola, with the aim of “strengthening the dialogue with the Angolan authorities and strengthening cooperation and the relationship with a country with which Portugal has historical relationships of proximity”.

A note from João Cravinho’s office states that the head of Portuguese diplomacy should be received by President João Lourenço and has a meeting with his Angolan counterpart, Téte António.

The Portuguese minister told the press in Luxembourg yesterday that the visit to Angola has “a symbolic and a practical dimension”.

“Firstly, it was very important to signal at the beginning of my term as Minister of Foreign Affairs and at the beginning of the XXIII Government the importance, the centrality that Angola has for us in our foreign policy”, began by saying the minister, who was speaking after participate in a meeting of EU heads of diplomacy.

João Cravinho underlined that “Angola is a bilateral partner of the greatest importance, it is currently also president of the CPLP and, therefore, there is a symbolic dimension”. “There is also a practical dimension, because it will allow us to make contact with our economic agents, with the Portuguese community in Angola and, obviously, above all, with the Angolan authorities”, he continued.

Regarding contacts with the Angolan authorities, the minister pointed out that the objective will be, above all, to “understand better the way they are seeing the bilateral relationship and the framework in which we currently operate, whether in Africa, in Europe and in the context of international more generally”.

The visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to Angola, between today and tomorrow, was announced last week, in Luanda, by the Portuguese ambassador, Francisco Alegre, at the end of an audience with President João Lourenço, who also received the president of executive committee of the Portuguese banking institution Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Paulo Macedo.

The diplomat mentioned, on the occasion, that when he presented his credentials, President João Lourenço challenged him in the sense that Portugal should play an important role in the process of diversifying Angola’s economy.

Francisco Alegre said that he has visited several Portuguese companies, not only in the construction and distribution sector, but also those focused on the industry.
