Africa-Press – Angola. Officials from the public and private sectors in the province of Huambo praised, this Tuesday, the dignity of the new General Labor Law (LGT) which, among several benefits, ensures job stability.

Heard this Tuesday, regarding the General Labor Law (LGT – Law no. 12/23, of 27 December), employees from the Education, Health, Public Administration, Banking and Commerce sectors were unanimous , stating that unlike the previous one, the current one takes greater care of human dignity and reinforces workers’ rights.

The employees went further and highlighted the fact that the legislator cautions that employment contracts become the rule in the employment relationship and those for a fixed period, only for exceptional conditions and for reasons that the law provides, up to 5 years, values even more the diploma.

Employee Guedes Alípio, from the Education sector, pointed out the advantage of safeguarding social aspects and the safety of workers, by ending the distinction between companies based on their size, for the purposes of hiring and recognizing occupational diseases.

It also highlighted the implementation of the principle of gender equality even if there is a change in the course of the employment relationship, between men and women, as well as the right to reserve the privacy of private life and data protection and prohibit employers from demanding tests and medical examinations, as another degree gain.

Zulmira Nambolo, linked to Health, reinforced that the obligation for written contracts to be registered by the Ministry of Public Administration, Labor and Social Security, also, as positive points of the law.

Ana Maria Chissola, from the Public Administration, highlighted that the law in question takes away the benefits and room for maneuver from the employer, who in the previous one (Law no. 7/15 of 15 June), arbitrarily dismissed employees, based in the Fixed-Time Contract.

Some bank employees consider that the new General Labor Law, introducing teleworking, as well as preventing companies from requiring women applying for employment to carry out or present pregnancy tests or exams, completely changes the Angolan labor paradigm..

Among the disadvantages, they indicated the excess of holidays in the national calendar, whose full implementation largely depends on the supervision of the Ministry of Public Administration, Labor and Social Security.

António Fernando, from the Commerce sector, emphasized that with the current diploma, the worker is in a position to perform their physical or mental work with ease, taking into account compliance with the principles and rules established in the standards.

The new diploma that regulates work in Angola, in force since last March, among others, ensures greater job stability and balance in the relationship between employer and employee.

Organized into 322 articles, 11 chapters, 46 sections, 25 subsections, 2 divisions and 5 subdivisions, the new General Labor Law was published in the Official Gazette, in the I Series – No. 245, of December 27, 2023, after its approval by the National Assembly and promulgation, on December 11, 2023.
