Culture closes illegal churches and religious sects in Lunda-Sul

Africa-Press – Angola. Around thirty illegal churches and religious sects were closed, this Monday, in the municipality of Saurimo, Lunda-Sul province, for illegally carrying out their activity.

Speaking to the press, the director of the Provincial Culture Office, Nelson Muiuca, said that those responsible for the churches and sects involved had been sensitized, but that some religious leaders refused to comply with local government regulations.

“The definitive closure of these churches and sects is the result of Government guidance, with a view to adapting protection strategies against increasing vandalism and related acts that compromise people’s comfort and safety”, he explained.

The person in charge appealed to the multisectoral team created for this purpose and the population in general, for greater vigilance to prevent representatives of the targeted churches from resuming services.

The targeted churches are located in the neighborhoods of Txizainga I and II, Santo António, Manauto, Agostinho Neto, Sassamba, among other neighborhoods.

According to data from the Department for Religious Affairs, 102 churches and sects operate in the municipality of Saurimo, 14 of which are illegal.
