Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, arrived this Friday morning, in the city of Dundo, Lunda-Norte province, for the inauguration of the Luachimo hydroelectric dam.
The minister’s agenda also foresees the laying of the first stone for the construction of the electrical substation and the energy transmission line in the mining town of Fucauma.
The Luachimo hydroelectric dam began to be rehabilitated and expanded in 2016, increasing its energy production capacity from 8.4 to 34 megawatts.
The project is part of the Energy Sector Action Plan 2023 – 2027, aligned with the Long-Term Agenda 2050, and foresees the continued diversification of the energy mix in order to incorporate at least 72% of renewable energies, with this , achieve the electrification rate of 50%.
For example, from 2022 to March this year, the province of Lunda-Norte had a fuel consumption of around two million, 208 thousand and 176 liters of fuel that fed the Cacanda thermal power plant, in Dundo, whose costs were 297 million, 868 thousand and 760 kwanzas.
In April this year, with the completion and entry into operation of the Luachimo dam, fuel consumption was only 309 thousand, 807.70 liters, which cost the State coffers 41 million, 824 thousand and 39 kwanzas.
Lunda-Norte, with more than one million inhabitants, results from the division of the former province of Lunda, on July 4, 1978.
It is located in the northeast of the country and is made up of the municipalities of Chitato (political and economic capital), Cambulo, Caungula, Cuilo, Cuango, Capenda Camulemba, Lucapa, Lubalo, Lóvua and Xá-Muteba.
