The second preparatory meeting of the 6th World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments is scheduled for October this year, in Geneva (Switzerland), according to a deliberation taken this Friday, at the end of the first meeting, in which the president of the National Assembly participated, Carolina Cerqueira.
The second and final day of work was reserved for political and practical aspects linked to the holding of the 2025 conference.
At this point, participants discussed the format of the conference, which will have plenary sessions, panels to discuss specific topics with the involvement of organizations from the civil society, private companies, academics, scientists and the press.
Regarding the format of the next conference, the president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, proposed that it include virtual participation, taking into account the complexity of the presidents’ agendas and the costs incurred.
A restricted meeting of the eight women presidents of Parliaments present took place behind closed doors.
It dealt with issues related to the themes and organization of the 5th Conference of Presidents of Parliaments, approximately 60, which precedes the 6th World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, also taking place in July 2025 , in Switzerland.
In this preparatory meeting, Angola defended the inclusion of themes linked to peace education, conflict prevention and coordination of parliamentary agendas at regional level, giving the example of the parliaments of the SADC and CIRGL countries.
On Thursday, the first day of the event, Carolina Cerqueira defended strengthening the role of parliaments in local and global governance, defending human rights, strengthening the rule of law and people’s security in the face of the vulnerability to which they are subject in situations of crisis and natural disasters.
The leader of the Angolan parliament, who focused her speech on the state of the world and the future of multilateralism, emphasized that multilateralism, principles and values in defense of peace must be reinforced through diplomacy, solidarity and parliamentary cooperation.
In her view, the permanent link between governments and civil society must also be strengthened, the inclusion of young people in parliaments and the recognition of women’s contribution to decision-making, especially at a political level, based on the resolutions of the UN.
Carolina Cerqueira also reaffirmed the commitment of Angola and its institutions to the values and principles of democracy and the need for strong and credible institutions as recommended by the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) held in Luanda on 23 on October 27, 2023.
The preparatory meeting aimed to reflect on the current challenges of world peace, sustainable development and democracy.
Parliamentarians analyzed the results of previous conferences, with emphasis on the evolution of inter-parliamentary cooperation over the years and the priority of the agendas of member countries’ parliaments in the face of global and regional geopolitical challenges.
The president of the National Assembly was elected, jointly with his counterparts from Côte D ́Ivoire, Tanzania, Algeria and Nigeria, member of the Preparatory Committee of the 6th World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments, representing the African group.
The decision came from a meeting of the Executive Committee held last April in Geneva, which approved the proposals of the regional groups of the IPU, to elect the 21 members of the Preparatory Commission for the World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments.
