Africa-Press – Angola. The Sports Association for People with Disabilities, in the province of Cunene, has in its portfolio the massification of football for amputees, in order to participate in the sport’s national championships.
The intention was expressed, this Monday, by the secretary of the aforementioned association, Miguel Agostinho, stating that the goal for this year is to work towards promoting football for amputees, in order to guarantee the participation of local athletes. in national tests.
To this end, he explained that it is essential that there is support in terms of crutches and other materials to practice the sport.
He added that, without crutches, nothing can be done and that they have already contacted several institutions, but they remain closed, therefore, he appealed to related institutions and the business class to collaborate with the cause so that sport in the province becomes a reality.
He made it known that currently 22 male and female wheelchair athletes are monitored in the province, with whom they participate in athletics events, as it is a sport that does not require many materials.
Miguel Agostinho said that since the creation of the association in 2015, he has participated annually in national cycling championships, where the province’s performance has been “good”, reaching third place in the classification, despite technical difficulties.
He explained that these events have been promoted by the Paralympic Committee, which has provided accommodation and food for the athletes, as well as the provincial government itself, which helps transport the athletes to the competition site.
Likewise, he defended the need to promote more sporting events, on special dates, such as the province’s anniversary and other anniversaries, to awaken Paralympic sport in the region.
However, he highlighted the importance of Paralympic sport, as it brings together a section of society with special needs, who need an occupation.
“People with disabilities see sport as an important means of removing depression, delinquency and excessive alcohol consumption, which ends up helping a lot in the psychological and emotional well-being of the practitioner.
The Sports Association for the Disabled in Angola, was created in 1994, currently controls more than two thousand and 500 athletes from different sports, with emphasis on football for amputees, athletics, swimming, among others.
