Africa-Press – Angola. The Secretary of State for the Civil Aviation, Maritime and Port sectors, Rui Carreira, considered, this Friday, in Namibe, the relaunch and modernization of the Namibe Corridor to promote a sustainable business environment in the region.
Rui Carreira demonstrated this intention at the opening of the first Forum on the Port of Namibe Value Chain, held on the occasion of 70 years of existence of this important infrastructure in the province and the Southern Region.
The government official highlighted that the National Development Plan 2023-2027 envisages a sustainable Transport sector that acts as a catalyst for economic growth, competitiveness, mobility of citizens and regional integration, when he referred to the “urgent need” to relaunch the Namibe Corridor , which has the Port of Namibe as its starting point.
On the occasion, the Secretary of State also presented the plan to relaunch southern cabotage, which has been the object of the Ministry of Transport’s intention as a way of reducing regional asymmetries, highlighting that the players in the Port of Namibe Value Chain, with highlighting the Moçâmedes Railway, which is intended to be modernized to be at par with ongoing investments as it plays a fundamental role in the perspective of a sustainable business environment in the region.
The plan, he continued, is to connect the production centers and later the north of Namibia and the landlocked countries, and take the current operational standards of the ports at a global and regional level, using technologies, an item considered fundamental for port efficiency and competitiveness.
The Port of Namibe was opened in 1954, having been designed to boost the economic development of the southern region of the country and has played a fundamental role as one of the main ports in the country, already as the third largest port within the context of the Namibe port industry. Angola.
Participating in the event are representatives of government ministries at central and local level, financiers (Credit Guarantee Fund, Active Venture Capital Fund of Angola and Sovereign Fund of Angola and representatives of Commercial Banking), chambers of commerce and business associations, as well as embassies and international organizations, private operators in the maritime, port and logistics subsectors, and governors of the provinces of Cuando Cubango, Cunene, Huíla and Namibe.
