Africa-Press – Angola. Portugal expressed interest in working with the Angolan Government in boosting the Textile and Footwear sector in the country, given the potential that the sector presents in the country, declared the ambassador to Angola, Francisco Duarte, in an audience with the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Rui Miguens.

At the meeting, held on Thursday and published yesterday on the website of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, issues relating to the textile, footwear and olive oil industry chain were addressed, given the enormous potential and competitive advantages that Portugal holds in these sectors, being of the largest exporting industries and those that contribute most to the Portuguese trade balance.

Like Portugal, Angola has the conditions to develop and become self-sufficient in these sectors, according to the website, which states that the ambassador emphasized the importance of observing the Angolan authorities’ commitment to increasing domestic production and exports, as well as import substitution, so that the national economy contributes to the social well-being of the population.

According to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Textile and Clothing sectors employ around 75 million workers (officials) worldwide, of which 85 percent are women.

The sector is also responsible for two percent of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), consuming 80 billion pieces, moving 2.4 trillion dollars per year and 750 billion dollars in exports.

Angola needs to be an active part of this market, as a strong Textile and Clothing sector is an effective component in the strategy to reduce poverty and imports, considers the website.
