Revitalization of Mupa National Park Among Government'S Priorities

Africa-Press – Angola. The revitalization of the Mupa National Park, in Cunene, is one of the Angolan government’s priorities for the current year, with a view to its use and conservation, the Environment Minister Ana de Carvalho said Sunday in Ondjiva city.

“We drew up a plan to revitalize this conservation area in the course of this year, because it had been without action for a long time, and its reference was the giraffe. So we want to bring this park back to life,” the minister said.

Ana de Carvalho recalled that there are 14 conservation areas in the country, and that progress has already been made in the Iona and Da national parks, while the conditions in Bicuar have also been improved.

Illegal hunting and indiscriminate logging in Mupa Park threaten the extinction of various species, a situation that requires urgent intervention by the authorities to protect fauna and flora.

Mupa National Park, located in southern Cunene province, covers an area of 6,600 kilometers.

It was established as a Reserve in 1938 and transformed into a national park in 1964 to protect the Angolan giraffe and other animals such as the lion, leopard and hyena.

Constituted as an International Reserve, it serves as a corridor for the movement of animals from Namibia, Angola, Zimbabwe and Botswana, thanks to its grazing and water resources for the animals.
