Africa-Press – Angola. As part of the Sports Envoy program, the United States Embassy in Angola, in collaboration with the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB), is holding a tournament today at 9:00 am on the Vila Clotilde court in Luanda.

The activity marks the end of a week of sporting events dedicated to basket ball, held between the 4th and 8th of this month, with workshops and lectures aimed at players, coaches and managers.

Special envoys Malcolm Lemmons and Sheryl Swoopes, former professional basketball players, have led the activities carried out so far in the country’s capital and will also be present at the event, along with the deputy press attaché for Culture and Education at the US Embassy, Benjamin Stevenson.

Titled “The Crossover to a Bright Future,” the program aims to promote social inclusion, youth development and health awareness through sports, as well as the transformative role of basketball in communities.

Topics such as entrepreneurship, nutrition, mental health, combating harassment and civic engagement, in addition to a donation of tennis sports equipment marked the work agenda of Sheryl Swoopes and Malcolm Lemmons.

The basket ball tournament will bring together young athletes from various neighborhoods in Luanda, with the aim of inspiring athletes, club leaders, government officials and entrepreneurs to see sport not only as a healthy practice, but as an industry capable of generating revenue and promoting the economic and social development of Angola.

According to a statement from the US Embassy, the event will be an “excellent” opportunity to highlight the positive impact of sport on Angolan youth and its role in promoting lasting social change.
