INAMET Refutes Cyclone Approach in Southern Angola

Africa-Press – Angola. Angola’s National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INAMET) refuted Thursday the information circulated on social networks that there is a tropical cyclone approaching the southern region of the country.

According to a note, INAMET explains that, historically, cyclones that hit the East Coast of Southern Africa have never reached Angolan territory, due to the fact that the country is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, with relatively cold sea surface temperatures, which inhibit the occurrence of this phenomenon.

The institution justifies that, for the ‘permanence of a Tropical Cyclone, it is necessary to constantly supply energy (latent heat) resulting from the relatively high temperatures of the surface of the oceans and when they reach the continent they lose strength and dissipate due to the lack of necessary energy, and this is not the case in Angola’.

In the note, the institute points out that, with the modernization of its services, at the initiative of the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, equipment was installed that allows the monitoring of meteorological phenomena that cause damage to society.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics requests that, for additional information on weather and climate, the public consider only the data published by INAMET.

For the South of Angola, Huíla, Namibe, Cunene and Cuando Cubango, INAMET predicts, for the next 24 hours, until 6 pm on Friday (20), moderate light rain, with the probability of thunderstorms in some municipalities in the province of Huíla.

Partly cloudy skies are forecast in some municipalities in the provinces of Cunene and Namibe.

The city of Lubango, in Huíla, will have a minimum temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 27, Moçâmedes, in Namibe, a minimum of 17 and a maximum of 26, while in Menongue, in Cuando Cubango, it will be a minimum of 21 and a maximum of 30.
