Angola Fails to Escape Trump’S Fiscal Fury – US Imposes 32% “Reciprocal Tariffs”

Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the United States of America announced this the imposition of “reciprocal tariffs” on imports. Angola is not exempt from Trump’s tax fury and will be taxed at 32%.

The value of the tariffs to be charged will be about half of what the US considers to be the sum of the taxes and duties levied on its products (63%). In other words: “Trump imposes reciprocal tariffs on Angola of 32%, after having found that Angola imposes barriers to the import of US products of 63% – resulting from the manipulation of the exchange rate and the imposition of import barriers”, as explained by Angolan economist Wilson Chimoco.

According to statistical data from the National Bank of Angola, in 2022, oil exports to the US totaled USD 168.4 million, increasing to USD 363.7 million in 2023 and reaching USD 783.7 million in 2024.

Donald Trump, who has railed against allies and rivals alike, said the United States had been “looted and raped” by its trading partners, and that “friends are often worse than enemies on trade.”

“The global trade war threatens to fuel inflation and stagnate growth,” Reuters says about the near future, noting that among the US allies are the European Union, which was targeted by a 20% tax, Japan by 24%, South Korea by 25% and Taiwan by 32%.

“Now facing 54% tariffs on exports to the United States, the world’s second-largest economy China has vowed countermeasures, as has the European Union – Washington’s friends and foes united in criticizing the measures they fear will deal a devastating blow to global trade,” Reuters writes.

Base rates come into effect on 5 April and higher reciprocal rates come into effect on 9 April.

Anticipating reactions against the application of these tariffs, the US President left a warning, in an admonishing tone: “Therefore, to the presidents, prime ministers, kings, queens, ambassadors and to all those who will soon call asking for exemptions from these customs duties, I say: end your customs duties, eliminate your barriers, do not manipulate your currencies.”

Trump accused allies and rivals of manipulating their currencies “like nobody can believe, which is a very, very bad thing and very devastating for us.”

“Remove your tariffs, remove your barriers, stop manipulating your currencies and start buying American products,” the US President declared.
