Africa-Press – Angola. A total of 18 works by 12 Angolan photographers are on display in the exhibition room at the National Union of Visual Artists (UNAP), entitled “Luanda Photo Walk”, a project by the international platform Unpublished Africa. The exhibition is curated by Leonardo Thomas, who informed that after the inauguration, last Thursday, it will be open to the public until May 23, from Monday to Friday, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.

“The ‘Luanda Photo Walk’ was supported by UNAP and aims to open space for future editions, training sessions and partnerships with national and international cultural institutions”, said the curator of the exhibition.

The international platform project Unpublished Africa portrays and has the mission to celebrate the authentic perspective of African photographers and the visual stories hidden in the streets of the continent’s major cities.

Leonardo Thomas stressed that in this official debut of the project on Angolan soil, the collective exhibition brings together works produced during sessions open to the public. These were held over the last few months, in which amateur and professional photographers walked together through different neighborhoods of Luanda, capturing images that tell the city from the inside, with its contradictions, beauty, rhythm and resistance. The curator said that it was very difficult, but for those who have goals and desire, anything is possible.

“Everyone in this collective exhibition is the photographers who participated in the photo walk, which took place in November 2024”, he said.

The Luanda Photo Walk is more than just an artistic exhibition; it proposes a deep reflection on authorship, the appreciation of creative work and the role of photography as a tool for memory and social transformation.

The initiative comes at an important time for the recognition of photography as an artistic expression and historical document in Angola.

Photographer Adalberto Mucanda is happy to have participated in a collective exhibition. The young man traveled from Benguela to be able to present his own works.

“Everything is going as we had hoped since last year. We had already planned this exhibition, the walk through the city of Luanda from urban to suburban areas. Thank God we are here to be able to exhibit our photographs”, he highlighted.

On the other hand, Álvaro Ica explained that it feels great to be part of this collective. “It was a super incredible journey. This exchange of experiences in my first exhibition is great. I have two photographs here, one depicts the walk of a street vendor and the other the aerial passage of the Pedonal do Prenda”, he concluded.
