Africa-Press – Angola. On Monday, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão, highlighted the transformative power of sport as a vital force for the development, cohesion and dignity of peoples during the opening session of the first ordinary meeting of the Consultative Council of Region 5, of the Higher Council for Sports of the African Union.

“Angola welcomes you with open arms and reaffirms its commitment to the principles of Region 5, with responsibility and African vision and a sense of mission. The meeting is not just a technical forum. It is an act of faith in the transformative power of sport”, he stressed.

Rui Falcão acknowledges that there are “difficult issues” in the context of sport, which he called for courage in approaching during the meeting that ends today at the Vitória Garden Hotel.

“It is also important that we have the courage to tackle difficult issues: full inclusion of people with disabilities in sport, stable funding for federations, professionalization of management, career transition for athletes, harmonization of integrity and anti-doping policies.”

The Advisory Board takes place after preliminary meetings of the various committees, in which issues related to sports in the region were discussed.

According to the rules, the committees analyze the issues and refer them to the “experts”, who in turn evaluate which ones to submit to the Advisory Board. The deliberations are submitted to the Council of Ministers, scheduled for December.

On the 24th of this month, in Arare, Zimbabwe, the awards ceremony for athletes from Region 5 will take place. The Games are scheduled for July in Namibia. The second ordinary meeting of the Advisory Board is scheduled for November, in the same country.
