Agostinho Neto University Rector Calls for Public Tenders for Researchers

Africa-Press – Angola. The Rector of the public Agostinho Neto University (UAN), Pedro Magalhães, asked the government on Thursday, in Luanda, to hold regular public competitions aimed to better address the lack of researchers in the institution’s organic units.

Speaking to the press as part of a visit by the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, to some UAN faculties, the rector said that currently the university has only 45 researchers, which is not sufficient to meet the needs of the units under its supervision.

According to him, the institution needs an increase of at least 50% of the staff provided for in its organic statute, without indicating the current number of employees.

At the time he also expressed his concern about the degradation of the university’s infrastructure, due to its condition over time.

With regard to laboratories, he stressed that the university has equipment that allow for innovation and entrepreneurship, but even so, more research centres of excellence are needed, as well as technicians to support scientific research.

On the other hand, Pedro Magalhães considered that the visit of the Vice-President of the Republic to the University is a sign of proximity between the academy and the government which demonstrates the concern for the country’s development through the training of staff.

According to him, it was an opportunity for UAN’s researchers, students and non-teaching staff to present some of their achievements and dreams, as well as to jointly structure a university development plan that contributes to the country’s development.

Agostinho Neto University was founded in 1976 and is the largest university in Angola, a reference in higher education in the country. It offers more than 90 courses in the areas of engineering, social sciences, law, economics, literature and medicine.
