President Denounces Opposition Sabotage of Government Actions

Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, reaffirmed this Monday in Luanda that “the people are their boss” and that the opposition sabotages some government initiatives that aim to improve the quality of life of Angolans.

In an interview with Angolan Public Television (TPA), the Angolan Head of State maintained that it is to the people that he must be accountable. “When the people put me in this position, in 2017, and then again in 2022, the mission they gave me was basically: we are saying to do everything to solve our problems,” he emphasized. He admitted that he is not always well understood, especially by the opposition, which thinks that in order to achieve their goals they should even try to hinder or sabotage some projects that the Executive has that are for the benefit of the people. The President of the Republic acknowledged the difficulties that the population is experiencing, but listed the achievements that are underway to combat the asymmetries, having stated that if the country had more money it would create a second Integrated Plan for Intervention in Municipalities (PIIM).

“When we said that we were going to use those financial resources to finance the PIIM, we heard voices of opposition, as they say, discouraging us from doing so. Don’t do that, you are compromising the future of our children”, he recalled.

Political-administrative Division

Regarding the Political-Administrative Division, he stated that the territorial size of the country requires the existence of more than 21 provinces.

He mentioned that only three provinces and some municipalities were added because there are not enough resources to increase five or six provinces at once.

“If they existed, we would obviously do it at once. We have left Lunda-Norte, Malanje and Uíge undivided. We have not done it now because we understand that it is safer not to bite off more than we can chew. But we will get there one day. Someone will get there”, he stressed.

João Lourenço said that when he accepted the position of President of the Republic, he was aware that governing Angola is a challenge, but he had no other choice, because if he did not want to live in that situation, he would have preferred not to accept the position of President of the Republic.

“It is a daily, permanent challenge, which requires working almost 24 hours a day, Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, whether in Angola or outside Angola. I have no other choice. As they say, it is take it or leave it”, stated the Head of State.
