Africa-Press – Angola. At least 16 people were injured, eight of them critically, when a three-wheeled motorcycle crashed into a crowd on Sunday in the village of Golungo Alto during a funeral procession.

According to witnesses, the accident occurred when people taking part in the procession were struck by the motorbike, which was allegedly driven by a drunk driver carrying three passengers.

Cristo Pedro Sebastião, the municipal director of health in Golungo-Alto, reported that the eight seriously injured individuals, including the motorcyclist, are receiving treatment at the Cuanza-Norte General Hospital for multiple fractures and head trauma. These injuries require specialized care.

The other patients, whose condition is stable, are receiving care at the local hospital.

One of the victims, Leonel Leitão, explained that they were on their way to a funeral when a motorcycle traveling at high speed crashed into them.

Rosário Armando, the municipal commander of the National Police, said that, given the situation, the department organized an awareness campaign for motorcyclists against drunk driving and strict observance of traffic rules.

This is the first case of its kind in the province of Cuanza Norte this year, though seven citizens, including a pregnant woman, were seriously injured in a similar accident in 2024. That accident also involved a vehicle that lost control and surprised victims walking alongside a funeral procession in the municipal town of Golungo Alto.
