The Dangerous Signs of Instability Coming from above

Africa-Press – Angola. I am one of those who consider the putative candidacy of Higino Carneiro for president of the MPLA as a “non-issue” for the nation, which has so many and such huge problems to resolve. Just like those of António Venâncio, or Manuel Homem and Adão de Almeida…

The bad climate and political instability in Angola have also been instigated by the President of the Republic. It has been a long time. And after what he said in Cazombo a few days ago, without measuring the impact, the President repeated the dose of what I consider to be serious imprudence, during the interview given by TPA.

Due to a lack of tact, excessive vanity, ego and arrogance, he repeatedly has difficulty in making a very simple political reading, but one that could be decisive for his future: that he is following a dangerous path for the security and stability of the State; that in a State of Law and Democracy, the opposition is not obliged to support those in power, and even more so, due to 50 scandalous years of mismanagement; because the President of the Republic has difficulty in dealing with opposing opinions, not only from the opposition, but from other sectors of society and even within his party; that the remedy to avoid criticism and the crisis is good governance, listening more with ears that accept what is heard, and not to show for the sake of the photograph that he is a dialoguing person (especially with foreigners).

I am one of those who consider the putative candidacy of Higino Carneiro for president of the MPLA as a “non-issue” for the nation, which has so many and such huge problems to resolve. In the same way as those of António Venâncio, or Manuel Homem and Adão de Almeida, these two, as possible options for João Lourenço to ensure continuity, hypothetically, as is being spread on social media.

For now, this is a matter that concerns only the party(ies) themselves. And if for some reason this claim (by Higino Carneiro and also by António Venâncio) causes discomfort to the leader of that party, then, as president of the MPLA, he should call his fellow members and resolve the ‘kizango’ within that party, in light of the statutes, respecting the freedom and rights established therein, or with renunciations so that there is freedom for other options, such as alliances with other actors, as is done in the civilized world. Not in the uncivilized one, where the President wants us to remain.

With this persistently aggressive, dictatorial, absurd and unstatesmanlike stance, MPLA members themselves should be the first to reflect deeply on this, because it is clear that, with João Lourenço in the lead, they are closer to the grave than to an eventual electoral victory. But, even so, this is a problem for MPLA members.

The nation should not be held hostage by the whims of the President of the Republic, nor should it be dragged into this tantrum of a leader who insists on playing with outdated rules that are no longer “fit for consumption” in these times, far removed from the dictatorship and the revolutionary principles that they brought from the forests, responsible for the annihilation of thousands of young people, above all.

What we have been seeing, with each public intervention, is that President João Lourenço, in this promiscuity of exercising high State functions with those of leader of his party, surpasses himself in creating pockets of political and social tension.

He does not measure the consequences, which requires caution and a lot of common sense from all of us, so as not to allow ourselves to be dragged into this stance, which some sectors have denounced as being part of a strategy so that he himself and a group of associated interests remain in power for an indefinite period of time, prevented as he is by the Constitution from running for a third, fourth or fifth term.

Unfortunately, despite being our “employee”, we have no power to fire him even if it leads the “company” to bankruptcy. Like their bank. And if he decides to stay, unfortunately, there are those who will support him and if necessary, even kill in his defense, instead of, the superior interests of the Nation and the “Boss”.

For us, this is what is a concern and not the possible candidacy of Higino Carneiro who, if he believes he has that right, should continue to prepare himself. Just like the others.

Whether or not they meet the requirements to become presidents of the MPLA or candidates for the position of President of the Republic, from what we can see, the country is even less at risk of instability with the rise of any of the figures mentioned above, including Higino Carneiro (unfortunately due to his history), than with the permanence of João Lourenço, as long as the electoral process takes place transparently, without any favoritism towards the party-state.

Whether he likes it or not, time is running out for President João Lourenço, but it has not served him as a means of maturing, as an experience to “correct what is wrong and improve what is right”. He is showing us regression, and with each stage, he gives the impression of being less prepared to exercise a position of such high responsibility.

But for him, the blame lies with the opposition. It is never his. I had a teacher who said that the main sign and danger of incompetence is the difficulty the incompetent person has in recognizing his or her mistakes, attributing them to others. Making mistakes is not synonymous with incompetence, as long as one learns from them.

Attributing them to others, as the President of the Republic repeatedly does, is not appropriate for someone who has been through academia. It sets a bad example for employees, subordinates and even descendants.

On the other hand, we must not forget that the opposition we have is the result of difficulties imposed by those in power. Just as there is a problem with health, education and all other sectors of the country’s life. Or is everything okay after all? Not acknowledging all this is a low blow!
