Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan President and Chairperson of the African Union (AU), João Lourenço, arrived Saturday (5) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he will attend, on Sunday, the 17th BRICS Summit.
The presence of the Angolan Head of State responds to an invitation made by his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who assumes the rotating presidency of BRICS this year.
The Summit brings together authorities from 27 countries and representatives of seven international financial bodies and institutions.
Several world leaders such as the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, and the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, are already on stage at the event.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also arrived on Saturday.
Representatives from Mexico, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Uzbekistan and Nigeria are also already in Brazil.
Throughout the day, delegations from the United Arab Emirates and Turkey are expected, as well as the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Despite the context of conflict in the Middle East, Iran will be represented by Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, while Egypt will be represented by Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly
This year Summit will be marked by heavy absences, such as that of the President of China, Xi Jinping, and that of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, who will participate by videoconference.
The President of Egypt, Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi, and the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, have also confirmed their absence.
