Africa-Press – Angola. Angola’s National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG) and the Contractor Group of Block 1/14 on Saturday announced the discovery of an offshore exploration well with the possibility of generating more than one trillion cubic feet of gas.
This is a discovery made in the Gajajeira-01 well, located offshore the Lower Congo Basin, in Angola, which has up to 100 million barrels of condensate associated, according to a press release on Saturday.
The well drilled on April 1, 2025, in a water depth of 95 meters and about 60 kilometers from the coast, found sandstones containing gas and condensate in one of the targets of the Lower Oligocene, called LO100, with preliminary results and fluid samples indicating several reservoirs with good mobility.
The document adds that the results confirm the presence of a hydrocarbon system, opening up new exploration opportunities in the area.
Despite this, Azule Energy, one of the members of the Contractor Group, will continue to assess the full potential of the Gajajeira-01 well discovery and, together with the partners of Block 1/14, will determine the best path forward for possible development.
According to the note, the first section was safely drilled, using advanced evaluation and formation control tools to assess the quality of the reservoir and the characteristics of the fluid, prioritizing the safety of operations.
Quoted in the document, the chairman of the Board of Directors of the ANPG, Paulino Jerónimo, considers the new discovery a motivating element in this commitment that has been promoted with the attraction of private investment in the sector, aiming at the development and monetization of natural gas.
The manager also highlights the achievement as an important resource in strengthening access to energy resources and domestic consumption, in addition to its great importance in boosting the petrochemical industry and fertilizer production in the country.
For his part, the director general of Azule Energy, Adriano Mongini, points to the discovery as a landmark moment for gas exploration in Angola, as the Gajajeira-01 well is the first dedicated to gas exploration in the country and its success reinforces business confidence in the potential of the Lower Congo Basin.
“We are proud to contribute to Angola”s long-term energy development with a focus on sustainability and energy security,” he assures.
Drilling operations continue in the Gajajeira-01 Well, with the last interval of the Lower Oligocene LO300 expected as the next target.
The Block 1/14 Contractor Group is operated by Azule Energy, with 35% of the shares, in association with Equinor (30%), Sonangol E&P (25%) and Acrep (10%).
