Africa-Press – Angola. The Speaker of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, traveled to Mozambique on Sunday to participate in the XIV Parliamentary Assembly of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), which will be held on July 14 and 15 in Maputo.

Held under the motto “For Peace and Citizenship in the CPLP,” the event aims to strengthen ties between member countries.

Speaking to the press, Carolina Cerqueira said the event is an opportunity to assess, through dialogue and consensus, global challenges related to peace and, in particular, the role of parliaments in defending human rights, development, and sustainability.

The lawmaker added that Angola, as a full member state with a population estimated at over 35 million out of the CPLP’s 290 million inhabitants, will have a “firm” voice in the Community’s parliaments so that, through parliamentary diplomacy, a mechanism can be found to help preserve peace, promote development, and strengthen citizenship.

The Speaker highlighted that Angola has developed an “active, present, and inclusive” parliamentary diplomacy, which has led it to become a full member of the Association of Francophone Parliaments and to host several global parliamentary meetings.

“Our parliamentary diplomacy has manifested itself as a mirror of what Angola is among nations, not only African, but internationally,” Cerqueira said.

The agenda includes addressing issues related to good governance and effective compliance with the resolutions and recommendations of the CPLP Parliamentary Assembly.

The Angolan delegation includes deputies Justino Pinto de Andrade, Odete Tavares, and Nazário Vilhena. The secretary-general of the National Assembly, Pedro Agostinho de Neri, is also accompanying the parliamentary delegation.

Transfer of the organization’s presidency

During the event, Mozambique will assume the rotating presidency of the organization.

The 14th Plenary Assembly will be another opportunity to strengthen the parliamentary dimension of the CPLP, with a view to promoting stability, democracy, and cohesion among its members.

The CPLP Parliamentary Assembly is composed of nine member states, namely Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, Mozambique, and Timor-Leste.

Its objective is to promote peace, citizenship, good governance, and sustainable development in the Portuguese-speaking community, establishing itself as an important platform for dialogue and cooperation between the parliaments of the Portuguese-speaking world.
