Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, in Lisbon, that relations between Angola and Portugal “have never been at such a high level”.

The statements were made during a press conference at Belém Palace, following a meeting with the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, as part of his two-day official visit to the lands of Camões.

“Relations between our countries have never been at such a high level, and what we intend to do is work to maintain that level and, if possible, improve it,” said João Lourenço.

On the occasion, the Angolan Head of State said that this visit to Portugal takes place at a symbolic moment, as Angola celebrates its 50th anniversary of national independence and aims to strengthen bilateral friendship and cooperation, while also recognizing the solidarity shown by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa over the past few years.

The Angolan President thanked Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa for his constant presence in Angola over the past few years, recalling that the Portuguese head of state was present at important moments, such as the inauguration ceremonies of both his mandates, and also on delicate occasions, such as the funeral of former President José Eduardo dos Santos.

“He is the head of state who has visited Angola the most times. He was present during difficult times for our people, which is an unequivocal sign of consideration and friendship between countries and, above all, between peoples,” he emphasized.

João Lourenço said that he made a point of making this visit during Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s term of office, considering it a demonstration of respect and gratitude for the role played in bringing the two States closer together.

The Angolan President’s agenda also includes meetings with the Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, and with the President of the Assembly of the Republic, as well as participation, on Saturday, in the closing of the Euro-Africa Forum, at which João Lourenço will speak in his capacity as President-in-Office of the African Union.

Regarding his intervention at the Forum, President João Lourenço stated that he will address, in addition to bilateral relations, issues of regional and global interest such as food security, energy transition, peace and geostrategic challenges on the African continent.

The state visit symbolizes the continuity and deepening of cooperation between Angola and Portugal, two countries united by historical, cultural and economic ties.
