African Union tries to reduce impact of humanitarian crisis

Africa-Press – Angola. African Union Heads of State seek to find solutions to the serious humanitarian crisis plaguing the continent, during the Humanitarian Summit and the Donor Conference, to be held today in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, arrived late yesterday afternoon, in this city, to participate in the event that seeks new commitments in terms of donations.

The humanitarian situation on the continent is described as worrying due to phenomena such as climate change, conflict and natural disasters. This has caused a wave of refugees and internally displaced people, which will require Heads of State and Government to reflect deeply in search of concrete solutions.

Angola considers that the answer to the current problems implies the mobilization of resources that must be directed towards prevention actions and the promotion of resilience among local communities. The Minister of the Interior, Eugénio Laborinho, who headed the Angolan delegation to the meetings of the Executive Council of the African Union, defended the immediate operationalization of the organs and agencies of the organization, taking into account their “importance in the collection of data necessary to combat the allied consequences to the migratory and humanitarian issue on the continent”.

The African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and the Blue Economy, Josefa Sacko, said that USD 1.5 billion was mobilized for the emergency fund to support farmers in Africa, so that the continent can have food sovereignty.

“The peasants are cultivating, but it is enough to have floods to lose all the production. So, it is good that we mobilize resources to support the farmers or families in the moment of the climatic crises”, said Josefa Sacko to the Angolan press, in Malabo.

The Humanitarian Summit is preceded by another high-level event, in which the Heads of State will create mechanisms to discourage unconstitutional changes of Government (coups d’état), terrorism and violent extremism that spreads across the continent.

On this matter, Angola defends the adoption of energetic and comprehensive measures that must include political, economic and criminal responsibility, among others.
