UNITA Lauds Changes to Electoral Law

Africa-Press – Angola. The parliamentary bench of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) party on Wednesday informed that the changes to electoral legislation, unanimously approved by the National Assembly, will allow greater confidence and transparency in the next elections in Angola, scheduled for 2027.

In a statement after the final vote on the amendments, the country’s largest opposition party said it voted in favor of the new Organic Law on General Elections (LOEG), believing the changes were “necessary to create a legal framework that generates some confidence in the electoral processes.”

As the main changes UNITA mentions the maintaining of the voter registration card, alongside the Identity Card, to continue being valid as one of the prerequisites to be able to vote in 2027, the elimination of mobile polling stations, the elimination of summary minutes, as well as the improvements to the elements that make up the voting table minutes.

The largest opposition party added that it is worth noting that legible copies of the voting table minutes are signed and stamped by the heads of the tables before being delivered to the list delegates and posted at the polling station.

It also highlights that the copies of the voting table minutes will have evidentiary legal value, while an alternate delegate may replace the regular delegate at any voting table in the same polling station.

The UNITA ́s statement added that the National Electoral Commission (CNE) will publish the names of the list’s delegates on its website, and the election results for the municipality will be published on the CNE website.

In this regard, the UNITA parliamentary bench emphasizes that, although this change is not perfect, “it was the only possible change, for the good of Angola and Angolans.”

Therefore, it explains that it voted in favor, considering that the proposed changes seek to establish the principles and rules “to make the electoral process free, fair, transparent, truthful and credible”.
