Africa-Press – Angola. More than 500 people have been left homeless in the municipalities of Luena and Léua, in the province of Moxico, after their homes were destroyed by heavy rain.

According to data from the Civil Protection and Fire Services obtained on Thursday, 61 houses of precarious construction were destroyed by the rains in the municipality of Luena (the provincial capital) in November alone, leaving 253 people homeless.

These incidents were reported in the Dala Sul locality, particularly in the Saúde, Cacupa, Samussole, Nunhonde and Mwa Teresa neighbourhoods, 25 kilometres south of the city, and in the 11 de Novembro neighbourhood on the outskirts of Luena.

In the municipality of Léua, 62 kilometres east of Luena, the rains affected 50 poorly built houses, 18 of which were completely destroyed, leaving 250 people homeless.

The constant rains in the province of Moxico in recent days have not only destroyed houses, but also opened new ravines in the region.
