João Quiosa highlighted the country’s progress and achievements, reflecting on Angola’s struggle against colonial rule, its transition to a peaceful, developing nation, and its key accomplishments.

These include expanding educational institutions from one to 37 universities, developing significant infrastructure with more than 15,000 kilometers of roads, and shifting to renewable energy, with 65% of energy now coming from renewable sources.

South African Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, on his turn, congratulated Angola on its golden jubilee and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening fraternal relations and brotherhood in the shared pursuit of peace, prosperity, and unity on the African continent.

The minister highlighted the fraternal relations between South Africa and Angola, as reflected in the Joint Cooperation Commission signed on 20 November 2000 and elevated to the Bilateral Commission in 2017 during the state visit of the President of South Africa. This continues to provide a solid foundation for the partnership despite much work lying ahead.

Minister Gayton McKenzie confirmed that the appointment of a South African ambassador to Angola is imminent, and that this matter is receiving the necessary attention from the government of unity and national reconciliation in South Africa, given that Angola remains one of its strategic and very important partners.

The relationship between the two countries has its roots in the anti-colonial and anti-apartheid struggles, and is currently characterized by cooperation agreements in the energy, economy, defence, mining and infrastructure sectors.
