Africa-Press – Angola. Diamond-producing countries, representatives of the industry in this segment and civil society on Monday in the United Arab Emirates, agreed to reform the Kimberley Process (KP) mechanism and redefine the concept of conflict diamonds, in order to face present challenges.
The position was taken during the ministerial plenary meeting on the Kimberley Process, which takes place on November 17 to 21.
According to a note that on Tuesday, the meeting was held again, for the first time since 2002, reinforcing the historical and urgent nature of the global diamond industry.
In the opening session, the president of the KP, Ahmed Bin Sulayem, quoted in the document, highlighted the “crucial moment” that the sector is going through and called for decisive action.
He stressed that “the world cannot miss the opportunity to modernize the definition of conflict diamonds, strengthen the Secretariat and ensure a sound financing model,” reaffirming the Kimberley Process as the most reliable international mechanism for protecting the legitimate trade in diamonds.
In turn, the Undersecretary for Foreign Trade of the United Arab Emirates, H.E. Fahad Al Gergawi, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to more cohesive and effective global governance, insisting on the need for stability, collaboration, and tangible results for the sector.
