Africa-Press – Angola. The new Speaker of the National Assembly (AN), Adão de Almeida, defended on Monday in Luanda the need for a strengthened and closer parliament to the citizens, with the aim to build points of convergence.

Elected unanimously during the 1st Ordinary Plenary Meeting, Adão de Almeida spoke of the need for Parliament to meet the wishes of the people closely and for the deputies to be the true spokespeople of Angolans.

“To strengthen citizenship and bring Parliament closer to and at the service of citizens, we are no different. We are no different when it comes to increasingly defending social justice, the continuous improvement of the quality of life of Angolans and the reduction of poverty,” Almeida said.

According to the Speaker, the foundation of Parliament, its condition and reason for existence and subsistence, lies in its ability to materially represent citizens.

He called for greater dynamism and commitment from the deputies and organized and structured work from the Specialized Working Committees, to ensure that the National Assembly is always worthy of its mandate to represent Angolan citizens.

Adão de Almeida praised the role played by previous Speakers of the house of laws for the sweat lent to the affirmation and strengthening of democracy and for the historical path towards dignifying the Angolan Parliament.
