Africa-Press – Angola. Angola’s ambassador to Cuba, Carlos Cruz de Lemos Sardinha Dias, highlighted the main gains achieved over the 50 years of independence and the government’s commitment to development since the achievement of peace in 2002.
Speaking at the ceremony commemorating 50 years of Independence celebrated on the 11th of this month, the diplomat emphasized the construction of essential infrastructure, such as modern hospitals, airports, ports, railways, schools and housing projects.
The diplomat underlined the implementation of education programs, training of personnel, as well as the rehabilitation of institutes and educational centers at various levels.
Before members of the Cuban government, the diplomatic corps accredited in Havana, the Angolan community residing in Cuba and representatives of civil society, he recalled the support given by the Cuban people in defending Angola’s sovereignty and in the fight against the apartheid regime in South Africa.
He highlighted this contribution as a milestone in the solidarity between the two states.
He stressed that Angola and Cuba maintain excellent cooperative relations, characterized by mutual respect and the fraternity that unites them, cemented by the blood shed in the same trenches by Angolans and Cubans in the struggles for independence, self-determination and sovereignty.
“This historical brotherhood between the two countries is indestructible, forged in the common struggle against colonialism and the shameful apartheid regime, under the leadership of two exceptional men: Agostinho Neto and Fidel Castro,” he stated.
Angola and Cuba collaborate on various multilateral platforms, such as South-South Cooperation, where solidarity and friendship underpin an increasingly dynamic partnership. The two countries established diplomatic relations on November 15, 1975, four days after the proclamation of Angola’s independence.
A year later, they signed the General Cooperation Agreement, which gave rise to the Bilateral Commission.
Currently, the States maintain cooperation in several sectors, supported by more than 54 bilateral agreements.
