Luanda Transport Company Reports AKZ 100 Million Losses

Africa-Press – Angola. The Luanda Urban Public Transport Company (TCUL) recorded losses estimated at around 100 million kwanzas in 2025, as a result of acts of vandalism against its vehicles, aggravated by the destruction of buses during taxi driver protests in July of this year.

The information was disclosed Tuesday by the TCUL CEO, Nelson Jorge, during the presentation of activities carried out by the company this year, adding that annually the company registers losses of around 50 million kwanzas due to the destruction of vehicles by passengers.

“Even when the police manage to arrest the passenger, sometimes they can’t even cover the cost of the damage caused to the bus,” Jorge said.

He said that since last September the transport company has been operating with 125 buses, having started the year with only 36 vehicles.

Nelson Jorge also said that the government provided the company with 35 new buses to support users of Dr. Antônio Agostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN).

He said the company has a fleet of 300 buses, with 175 in recovery process, and that In 2026, the company will put new buses at the disposal of users and open new routes.

Regarding revenue, Jorge considered the amount obtained to be negligible, as the urban service is loss-making, stressing that without government support, the price of urban transport per passenger would be estimated at 700 kwanzas.

Among the challenges, he pointed to combating acts of vandalism against the equipment and ensuring the safety of workers traveling from home to work and vice versa, as well as during the performance of their duties.
