Africa-Press – Angola. The State secretary for Youth, Danila Bragança, on Wednesday (11) in Lubango, southern province of Huíla, urged young women to prioritize their studies, particularly encoureging them to become scientists.

In statements to the press, on the sidelines of the main event for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, she stressed that education is the most powerful “weapon” used to develop countries and societies, which can bring benefits to Angola, a country with a predominantly female population.

She stated that science develops countries, nations, and societies, which is why it is essential that young women are prepared and confident to pursue sectors traditionally known as areas for men, such as engineering, maths, physics, chemistry, among others.

“A woman’s place is wherever she wants to be, wherever she feels comfortable, whether in law, education, or science, wherever a woman feels comfortable. We just need to pave the way, encourage them, so they feel comfortable pursuing science,” she emphasized.

She also suggested that young people in general focus on technical and vocational training, as it allows them to enter the job market in a short time.

In terms of challenges, she pointed to employability as the main one, because it is the basis for allowing young people to dream, but associated with it is the need for continuous training in order to find “good” paid jobs.

She reiterated that she is concerned about young women, because they often do not have access to education and training, which is essential to guarantee good jobs.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, February 11, was launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2015 with the aim of promoting the role of women and girls in science.

The date is an opportunity to promote, in a full and equal way, access to science and the participation of women and girls in this area.
