Africa-Press – Angola. The United Nations (UN) on Friday considered Angola’s leadership of the African Union (AU) effective and highlighted the commitment of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, to promoting peace and defending multilateralism.

The position was expressed by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, at the end of a meeting with the Angolan Head of State, on the sidelines of the 39th African Union Summit.

António Guterres congratulated João Lourenço on his leadership of the continental organization, which he described as “extremely effective”, having underlined the determination of the Angolan president in the quest for peace between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the M23 movement and Rwanda, through an effort marked by rare generosity in the current international context.

The UN Secretary-General added that, despite the challenges faced, multilateralism remains strong and that increasing severity of global problems prevents isolated solutions by States, which reinforces the need for international cooperation.

The 39th African Union Summit takes place on Saturday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This marks the end of Angola’s term as the continental organization’s rotating chair.
